Concentrated expertise on one day! At ecoMetals Day on September 21, 2022, the steel community will meet at Messe Düsseldorf for what is probably the most sustainable event of the year. The interdisciplinary congress will focus on the green transformation of the industry.
More than 25 Green Steel, Green Energy and Circular Economy pioneers from companies, associations, science and politics will present top-class lectures and panel discussions. They will illustrate why decarbonization of the steel and iron and steel industry is a joint task that can only be solved in close cooperation with the energy and digital industries.
In addition to political representatives from the Federal Ministry of Economics and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hans Jürgen Kerkhoff (President and Managing Director of the German Steel Federation), Dr. Gunther Kegel (President of the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (ZVEI) & Vice President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI)) and Dr. Timm Kehler (Managing Director of "Zukunft Gas") will be giving inspiring keynotes to set the tone for the congress.
The program then fans out into three parallel trains, "Green Steel," "Green Gas" and "Green Economy."
On the "Green Steel" train, participants can expect presentations by Martin Zappe, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, who will present the "SALCOS" project, Frank Ahrenhold, Head of Sustainable Steel Production at thyssenkrupp Steel Europe, who will provide insights into thyssenkrupp's decarbonization program, and Jürgen Fries, who will present Arcelor Mittal's path to climate-neutral steel production.
In the second train, "Green Gas," everything revolves around the gamechanger and decarbonization catalyst hydrogen. Samir Khayat from Energy4Climate, the NRW state association for energy and climate protection, Gerrit Riemer, spokesman for the HySteel - Expert Commission in the German Hydrogen Association DWV, and Gert Müller-Syring, spokesman for the H2 Competence Network of the DVGW, outline the key points of a functioning hydrogen economy. They show what needs to be done to ensure that both the industrial use of hydrogen in the steel industry and the hydrogen ramp-up on a broad front now pick up speed.
The third "Green Economy" train focuses on the Green Transformation. How can the industry enter the Circular Economy, how can economy and ecology be reconciled, and how can digitalization be used as a central enabler for the comprehensive decarbonization of steel production and processing?
Answers to these questions will be provided by Stefan Flapper of H2 Green Steel, who will present the concept of what is currently the most modern greenfield steel plant in Sweden, as well as Swiss Steel CEO-Frank Koch and Bernd Fleschenberg of TSR Recycling, who will present the current status of closing-the-loop efforts in steel recycling, and Prof. Dieter Wegener, spokesman for the ZVEI's Industry 4.0 leadership group, who will shed light on the revolutionary explosive power of the Digital Product Passport for the manufacturing industry.
For Rainer Salomon, Managing Director of the Forschungsvereinigung Stahlanwendung e.V.. , the program is particularly convincing due to its holistic interdisciplinary approach: "The ecoMetals Day is exactly the right event to determine one's own status quo and use it to develop a roadmap for the upcoming challenges in steel production and processing towards nearly CO2-free production. "
Jürgen Franke, Managing Director of Vulkan Verlag, adds: "All relevant topics of the technical, economic and ecological transformation of the steel industry under one roof! Thus, ecoMetals Day offers a comprehensive 360-degree view of the future of the industry, unprecedented in this synopsis, and condenses unique presentations into a new way of thinking about sustainability."
The innovative trade congress, which sees itself as the Steel Day of the Future, will be held as part of the new "decarbXpo" trade show format (www.decarbxpo.de). Visitors to the congress will receive free admission to the trade show. The event will be held at the Messe Düsseldorf site in the CCD Ost congress center. The content of the event is being organized jointly with the VDEh Steel Institute and the Forschungsvereinigung Stahlanwendung e.V. (FOSTA).
