Iron powder as sustainable fuel – a new concept of sustainable energy storage

Metal fuel, particularly mediated by iron powder, is a new concept of sustainable energy storage. It consists of exploiting the chemical stored energy of powders through their combustion. Circularity is achieved when the combusted powders is transformed back to its original metallic form, via hydrogen-based processes, thus permitting to restore the utilized energy. During this talk, the advantages and limitations of this new technology will be compared with other energy storage solutions. Finally, new insights from the current research on this topic will be unveiled.

Two sustainable approaches to secure European steelmaking industry

In line with the Paris Agreement, the European Union (EU) set itself ambitious climate and energy goals, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions gradually by at least 80 % until 2050. A further step towards a society with a sustainable and competitive economy was taken with the Green Deal 2019, a roadmap that sets out measures to achieve a climate-neutral EU by 2050. In this context the iron and steel industry has a significant impact, as it is one of the largest CO2 emitters, responsible for 7% of total CO2 emissions in Europe and 7-9% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions.
In order to achieve the set goals, it is necessary to transform the steelmaking industry, as part of the decarburization of Europe’s economy by Carbon Direct Avoidance CDA, towards natural gas-based (short-term) and hydrogen-based (long-term) processes as substitute for the carbon-based steelmaking route.
The technologies for this transformation process are already developed and ready to use.

Carbon capture in machinery industry - a value chain approach

The pandemic and the war in Ukrainian have elevated supply chain resiliency to the top of any executive's agenda, with supplier sustainability performance being acknowledged as a crucial risk indicator. The iron and steel sector, as the main supplier of the machinery industry, is the largest consumer of coal and emitter of greenhouse gases. It consumes approximately 7% of the world's energy supply and is responsible for 7–9% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The situation just escalates with the growing dependence on conventional energy sources. Can this contradiction ever be resolved? What are the promises and possibilities? This presentation will try to address one of the most pressing issues of the European economy, particularly the mechanical engineering industry, by presenting some promising initiatives.

Power-to-X technology development – An overview and the benefits for companies

Securing raw material and energy carrier supplies in Europe got more importance than ever. In the lecture I will give an overview on different Power-to-X technologies that we developed at Fraunhofer IGB BioCat. These are aimed at the synthesis of renewable methanol, ammonia, monomers, polymers, specialty chemicals and fuels. I will also show the economic benefit of our combined chemical-biotechnologic processes that use C1 chemicals as intermediate. Finally, I will outline how we can support companies in their effort to transfer the scientific knowledge into commercial processes.

Power-to-Gas – The importance of catalysis for the reduction of CO2 emissions

Today, the use of renewable energies and recycling of climate-changing gases are increasingly important. In this context, direct catalytic methanation of biogas with electrolytically produced hydrogen from renewable energies enables chemical energy storage (Power-to-Gas) and contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions. However, fluctuating availability of renewables in combination with small storage volumes result in an enhanced demand for dynamic process operation. In contrast to conventional methane production, methanation of biogas raises new challenges regarding fluctuating process conditions and feed gas impurities such as sulfur, which may cause deactivation of the most commonly applied nickel catalysts. Current research activities at the University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf contribute to this topic by investigating the catalytic methanation of carbon dioxide using a nickel-based catalyst under dynamic operation conditions.

How local carbon emissions are verified, and future improvements become visible through validation

Proof of reduced CO2 emissions in production processes can create a competitive advantage for manufacturers. They send a clear signal that they take positive action to address their contribution to the climate crisis. However, it is essential to have accurate measurements and verification of CO2 emissions to ensure that their statements are credible and provable.

With the veriX procedure, the potential of concrete measures for carbon savings is determined, necessary investments are identified, and future CO2 values are forecasted. As with previous carbon footprint (CFP; ISO 14067) or life cycle assessment (LCA; ISO 14040 and ISO 14044) methods, veriX first determines the status quo. This is done considering ISO 17029 and all standards and regulations relevant to the client. On this data basis, veriX checks the plausibility and completeness of the mass balances and material and energy flow. Finally, the client receives documentation of the results and validated statements on future CO2 emissions.

Road to carbon neutrality – the first step with a low-carbon float glass

CibusCell Technology – a cloud-based platform to scale up green hydrogen5

German software startup CibusCell helps hydrogen providers scale commercially viable green hydrogen. By combining data from sensors, weather, storage, electricity prices, demand and supply in real time, business decisions are automated and optimised. This makes hydrogen projects transparent and increases utilisation and profits. CibusCell was founded in 2020 in Speyer by former SAP executives and hydrogen engineers from RWTH Aachen University. The start-up quickly reached market maturity. It offers a cloud-based software solution (SaaS). At the beginning of the year, CibusCell filed a patent with the European Patent Office.

PMR Tech – decentral production of hydrogen-oxygen gas for low emission steel cutting

PMR Tech UG is a young technology start-up from the heart of the Ruhr area. We produce efficient hydrogen-oxygen gas generators for various industries. With the help of electric current, these devices split water into a gas mixture of hydrogen and oxygen. The gas produced in this way is a profitable and safe alternative to conventional fuel gases such as natural gas, propane, acetylene and hydrogen from pressure cylinders in oxyfuel technology. Since the gas produced burns CO2-neutrally, the burden on the environment is also reduced.

Design drivers for decentralized integrated green hydrogen projects – the cornerstone of hydrogen infrastructure in broad scale

Medium sized green hydrogen production and distribution plants add value by increased self-sufficiency, local optimization and security of a company’s business case. Besides the widely announced large scale electrolysis plants above 100MW, these decentralized plants are THE cornerstone of hydrogen infrastructure in broad scale. These systems, ranging in size from 2 to 20 MW, are based on standard key components, are configured according to customer use cases and can be invested "turnkey - ready to use".

In this lecture the influencing factors will be discussed that are necessary for the design of the plant. The plant concept obtained in this way is a basis for solid business case assessment and a prerequisite for realization of the invest project.

Decarbonizing heat in industrial processes

The lecture will show ways to decarbonize heat processes in every producing industry, from metals, glass and ceramics to food, paper and rubber. Kraftblock's systems recycle waste heat and/or convert renewable power. The core of these systems is a high-temperature energy storage that can store heat at up to 1300°C. The discharching temperature is adapted to the required temperature and heat transfer media. The storage is easily scalable, providing 4 MWh to 1 GWh and applicable in many use cases.

Wind energy and photovoltaics with power-to-heat is an important solution for the defossilisation of industrial process steam supply. Integrating green, regionally generated energy at BIO-FROST Westhof

This lecture will provide insights into LUMENIONs newest project: the installation of a storage system with a capacity of 20 MWh at Germany's largest organic frozen vegetable processing plant. The storage system will absorb power peaks of up to 5 MW from nearby wind energy, store it for up to two days and then provide it as needed for processing 10 tons of frozen vegetables per hour, always ensuring a CO₂-free production. This will save BIO-FROST Westhof approx. 7,500 tonnes of CO₂ per year.
