Carnegie Mellon University says the economies of scale for lithium ion batteries for EVs may be almost exhausted. If so - and the issue is debatable - the implications for the global energy storage industry are immense. Could those much-anticipated cost reductions for lithium ion batteries not materialize? In the meantime the lead acid battery industry is catching up and pioneering advanced products for grid storage. Moreover, in the developing world, regular lead acid batteries are already the basic energy storage unit for renewables in microgrids and a huge market waiting to happen.
