ENERGY STORAGE INDIA – The focal point of ES procurement in India

The energy storage solutions market size is expected to reach 15-20 GW by 2020 in India*. This applies to applications ranging from telecom tower backups, to grid ancillary services and renewable integration. Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) has already issued RFP for 3 pilot projects of 250 kWh energy storage systems in 3 different technologies.

Recently, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has constituted a standing committee on energy storage and hybrid solutions to explore renewable integration challenges in India including pilot projects. Within next couple of weeks MNRE also planning to issue an RFP to support demonstration projects for energy storage to assess feasibility of energy storage technologies for Renewable integration, microgrids(rural and/or commercial, industrial, residential applications) and large scale standalone systems small scale and grid connected MW scale renewable energy applications.

Some of the recent activities by ES market in India:

  1. MNRE – Created Energy Storage Standing Committee and is launching RFP for 4 energy storage projects
  2. PGCIL – has already launched project for 3 energy storage pilot projects for frequency regulation
  3. Exicom, Panasonic, Coslight - have supplied over $50 M LI-Ion batteries for telecom towers each in past 12 months
